Russian Circles performed at Union Stage in Washington, DC on October 29, 2019 — and I, Andy Jillson, was there to capture some of the trio’s instrumental magic. Yep, in this “Photo Flashback” we’re taking a trip down memory lane with Russian Circles. Continue reading below for more photos from the show. All images copyright and courtesy of Andy Jillson.

Russian Circles recently embarked on a North American tour in support of their newest album, Blood Year. I’m generally not a fan of instrumental music, but Russian Circles are a rare exception. This band fuckin’ rips!

For those of you who don’t know, Russian Circles are an American instrumental “post-metal/progressive metal” band based in Chicago, Illinois. The band was formed by childhood friends Mike Sullivan and Dave Turncrantz. After parting ways with their original bass player Colin DeKuiper in 2007, the trio was rounded out by bassist Brian Cook. The band take their name from a drill exercise used in ice hockey.

Russian Circles released their seventh studio album, Blood Year, in August 2019. The album was recorded at GodCity Studio in Salem, and at Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio Studio in Chicago. Russian Circles’ last two releases have both been produced by Kurt Ballou of Converge fame.

I would highly suggest seeing Russian Circles perform live if possible. They are a great band. They are unique, innovative, and have a kick ass drummer! Be sure to check out Russian Circles’ Official Website for all remaining tour dates and other info about the band.
